Pretty Jumper Knit Pattern

MATERIALS: Of Patons Beehive  Fingering, 3-ply (“Patonised” shrink-resist finish), 4 ozs. main shade, 3 ozs. 1st contrast, 1 oz. 2nd contrast. A pair each No. 12 and No. 10 “Beehive” needles.
MEASUREMENTS: To fit 32-34-inch bust; length from top of shoulders, 19 inches; sleeve seam, 6 inches.
TENSION: 7-1/2 stitches to an inch.
BACK
With No. 12 needles and 1st contrast, cast on 100 sts. and work 4 inches k. 1, p. 1 rib, decreasing 1 st. at end of last row (99 sts.). Change to No. 10 needles and pattern as follows:-1ST ROW: Right side facing, in 1st contrast, knit. 2ND ROW: In 1st contrast, k. 3, * k. 1, putting wool twice round needle, k. 3; repeat from * to end. 3RD ROW: In main shade, k. 3, * slip 1, k. 3; repeat from* to end. 4TH ROW: p.3, * slip 1, p.3; repeat from * to end. 5TH ROW: As 3rd. 6TH ROW: As 4th.

7TH ROW: k. 3, * drop the slipped st., knit the 4th st. from point of left needle, knit the 1st, 2nd and 3rd sts., then pick up and knit the dropped st., k. 3; repeat from* to end. 8TH ROW: Purl. 9TH ROW: In 2nd contrast, knit. 10TH ROW: In 2nd contrast, as 2nd row. In main shade, repeat 3rd to 6th rows inclusive.

15TH ROW: Knit the 4th st. froin point Of needle, then knit the 1st, 2nd and 3rd sts., k. 3, * drop the slipped st., knit the 4th st. from point of_needle, knit the 1st, 2nd and 3rd sts., then knit the dropped st., k. 3; repeat from * to last 4 sts., drop the slipped st., k. 3, knit the dropped stitch. 16TH. ROW: Purl.

These 16 rows form pattern. Continue repeating them, increasing at each end of the needle on next and every following 6th row until there are 121 sts. Work straight until side edge measures 12 inches.

Shape armholes by casting off 7 sts. at beginning of next 2 rows, then decrease 1 st. at each end of next 3 rows, then at each end of next 3 alternate rows (95 sts.). Work straight in pattern until 18k inches have been done, then shape shoulders by casting off 8 sts. at beginning of next 8 rows. Leave remaining 31 sts. on a spare needle for back of neck.

FRONT

Work exactly as for back until 16 inches have been done. Shape neck as follows:—Pattern 38, k. 2 tog., turn. Work on these 39 sts., decreasing 1 st. at neck edge on next 3 rows, then on next 4 alternate rows (32 sts.). Work straight until front measures same as back, then shape shoulder by casting off 8 sts. on next 4 alternate rows, armhole edge.

Return to remaining stitches and slip centre 15 sts. on a safety-pin for front of neck. With right side facing, join wool to remaining 40 sts., k. 2 tog., pattern 38. Work right shoulder to correspond with left, reversing shapings.

SLEEVES

With No. 12 needles and 1st contrast, cast on 76 sts. and work 2 inches k. 1, p. 1 rib, decreasing 1 st. at end of last row (75 sts.).

Change to No. 10 needles and pattern, increasing at each end of the needle on every 3rd row until there are 93 sts. Work a few rows straight until sleeve measures 6 inches. Start top shaping and see that you start on same row as for armhole shaping in back and front. Decrease 1 st. at each end of the needle on next 10 alternate rows, then on every row until 19 sts. remain. Cast off.

TO MAKE UP

Press work well under a damp cloth, avoiding ribbing. Join right shoulder seam. With No. 12 needles and 1st contrast, pick up and knit 108 sts. evenly round neck, including the stitches on spare needles at back and front of neck. Work 1 inch k. 1, p. 1 rib; cast off loosely in rib. Join left shoulder, side and sleeve seams; insert sleeves. Press all seams.
