Nautical Topper in Thick Wool Pattern

MATERIALS

BERNAT \ to Germantown (2 oz. skeins) – 3(4-4) Navy (M C.); 2(3-3) each of White (Color A) and Red (Color B)

1 pair each plastic knitting needles Nos. 6 and 10 1/2 OR ANY SIZE NEEDLES WHICH WILL GIVE THE STITCH GAUGE GIVEN BELOW

1 plastic crochet hook No. 6

8 buttons

GAUGE: 9 sts .= 2 inches           15 rows = 2 inches

PATTERN STITCH: Multiple of 4 sts plus 3.

Row 1: Using Color A, * K 3, sl I, repeat from * ending K 3. Row 2: Using Color A, * K 3, bring yarn to front of work, sl 1, throw yarn to back of work, repeat from * ending K 3. Row 3: Using Color B, K 1, sl 1, * K 3, sl 1, repeat from * ending K 1.

Row 4: Using Color B, K 1, * bring yarn to front of work, sl 1, throw yarn to back of work, K 3, repeat from * ending K 1 instead of K 3.

Row 5: Using M C, repeat Row 1.

Row 6: Using M C, repeat Row 2.

Row 7: Using Color A, repeat Row 3.

Row 8: Using Color A, repeat Row 4.

Row 9: Using Color B, repeat Row I.

Row 10: Using Color B, repeat Row 2.

Row 11: Using M C, repeat Row 3.

Row 12: Using M C, repeat Row 4.

Repeat these 12 rows for pattern stitch.

BACK:

Using M C and No. 6 needles, cast on 69(73-79) sts. K 1, P 1 in ribbing for 20 rows, inc at even intervals to 79(83-91) sts on last row. Change to No. 10 1/2 needles and work even in pattern st until piece measures 10 1/2(10 1/2-11) inches. SHAPE ARMHOLES: At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 6(6-7) sts. Dec 1 st each end of needle every other row 4(4-5) times. Work even on 59(63-67) sts until armholes measure 8(8 1/4-8 1/2) inches. SHAPE SHOULDERS: At the beg of each of the next 4(6-6) rows bind off 6(5-5) sts. At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 7(6-7) sts. Bind off remaining 21(21-23) sts.

LEFT FRONT:

Using M C and No. 6 needles, cast on 41(43-­45) sts. K 1, P 1 in ribbing for 19 rows. On the next row work first 7 sts and put these sts on a holder to be worked later for front border; work to end of row, inc at even inter­vals to 39(43-43) sts. Change to No. 10 1/2 needles and work even in pattern st until piece measures 10 1/2(10 1/2-11) inches, ending with the same row of pattern st as on back at underarm. SHAPE ARMHOLE: At arm edge bind off 6(6-7) sts. Dec 1st at arm edge every other row 4(4-5) times. Work even on 29(33-31) sts until armhole measures 6(6 1/4,6 1/2) inches. SHAPE NECK: At neck edge dec 1 st

EVERY ROW 10(12-9) times. Work even on 19(21-22) sts until armhole measures 8(8 1/4-8 1/2) inches. SHAPE SHOULDER: At arm edge bind off 6(5-5) sts 2(3-3) times and 7(6-7) sts once. LEFT FRONT BORDER: S1 7 sts from holder onto No. 6 needles and using M C, continue in K 1, P 1 ribbing until piece measures same length as front to start of neck shaping. Bind off.

RIGHT FRONT AND RIGHT FRONT BORDER:

Work to cor­respond to left front and left front border, reversing all shaping and forming first buttonhole when piece measures 1/2 inch. BUTTONHOLE: Starting at front edge, work 2 sts, bind off next 3 sts, work to end of row. On the next row cast on 3 sts over those bound off previous row. Make 7 more buttonholes, evenly spaced – the last one to be made 1/4 inch below start of neck shaping.

SLEEVES:

Using M C and No. 6 needles, cast on 39(41-45) sts. K 1, P 1 in ribbing for 20 rows, inc at even intervals to 51(51-55) sts on last row. Change to No. 10 1/2 needles and, working in pattern st, inc 1 st each end of needle every 3(2 1/2-3) inches 4(5-4) times. Work even on 59(61-63) sts until piece measures approximately 18(18-18 1/2) inches, ending with the same row of pattern st as on back at under­arm. SHAPE CAP: At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 6(6-7) sts. Dec 1 st each end of needle every 4th row until 29 sts remain. Work even until cap measures 5(5 1/4 – ­5 1/2) inches. At the beg of each of the next 6 rows bind off 3 sts. Bind off remaining sts.

COLLAR:

Using M C and No. 6 needles, cast on 79(79-81) sts. K 1, P 1 in ribbing for 4 rows. At the beg of the next row work 5 sts and put these sts on a holder; work to end of row. On the next row work 5 sts and put these sts on a holder; P across remaining 69(69-71) sts, dec at even inter­vals to 55(55-59) sts. Change to No. 10 needles and work even in pattern st on 55(55-59) sts for 12 rows. Put these sts on a holder. LEFT FRONT EDGE: S1 5 sts from holder onto No. 6 needles and using M C, continue in K 1, P 1 ribbing until piece measures same length as short edge of collar. Put these sts on a holder. RIGHT FRONT EDGE:

Work to correspond to left front edge, ending with a right side row. FINISH COLLAR: Using M C, work 55(55-59)

sts in P 1, K 1 ribbing and then K 1, P 1 in ribbing on 5 sts of other edge — 65(65-69) sts on needle. Continuing in ribbing, at the beg of each of the next 6 rows bind off 9 sts. Bind off remaining 11(11-15) sts.

FINISHING: Sew underarin, shoulder, sleeve, front border and collar seams. Set in sleeves. Sew shaped edge of collar to neck edge to within M inch of each front edge. Using M C, work 1 row s c on each front edge. Finish buttonholes. Block to size. Sew on buttons.
