Vintage Sweater in Double Knit Pattern

Materials.

1st Size.

20 ozs. Lavenda Double Knitting or 18 ors. Lavenda Double Crepe.

2nd Size.

22 ozs. Lavenda Double Knitting or 20 ozs. Lavenda Double Crepe. Pair each needles Nos. 9 and II. 8 (8) Buttons.

Measurements.

To fit 34 (37) ins. Bust measurement. Length from shoulder 234 (234) ins. Length of undersleeve

seam…………..17 (17) ins.

Tension.

6 sts. and 8 rows equal one inch (No. 9 needles).

N.B. The tension of the knitting controls the size of the finished garment. Before commencing cast on 14 sts. and work in pattern for 16 rows. If your sample has less sts. per inch than our tension, try again with smaller needles and vice versa, then work the garment on the needles which produce our tension.

BACK.

Using No. 9 needles, cast on 110 (118) sts. and work in kl, pl rib for 4 (4) rows.

Now commence pattern

1st row. K2, • p1, k3, repeat from • to end.

2nd row. • P3, k1, repeat from • to last 2 sts., p2.

3rd row. • K1, p1, repeat from • to end.

4th row. As 3rd row.

5th row. P1, • k3, p1, repeat from • to last st., kI. 6th row. P1, • k1, p3, repeat from • to last st., k1.

7th row. As 3rd row. 8th row. As 4th row. These 8 rows form the pattern.

Continue in pattern until work measures 16 (16) ins. **

SHAPE ARMHOLES.

Keeping in pattern, cast off 4 (8) sts. at beginning of next 2 rows, then K2tog. at each end of following 6 (6) rows. 90 (90) sts.

Continue in pattern on these sts. until work measures 234 (234) ins. from commencement.

SHAPE SHOULDERS.

Cast off 10 (10) sts. at beginning of next 6 rows. Leave remaining 30 (30) sts. on a spare needle.

FRONT

Work as Back as far as .4,

SHAPE ARMHOLE AND FRONT OPENING. Keeping in pattern :

Next row. Cast off 4 (8) sts., pattern 44 sts., turn. Continue in pattern on these sts., decreasing one st. at armhole edge on next 6 (6) rows. 39 (39) sts.

Continue on these sts. until work measures 22 (22) ins.

SHAPE NECK. Wrong side facing

Cast off 4 (4) sts. at beginning of next row, then K2tog. at neck edge on every row until 30 (30) sts. remain. Continue in pattern on these sts. until work measures 234 (234) ins. from commencement.

SHAPE SHOULDER.

Commencing at armhole edge, cast off 10 (10) sts. at beginning of next and each alternate row three times. Return to remaining sts., rejoin wool and cast off 12 (12) sts., pattern to end of row.

Work on these sts. to correspond with first side.

SLEEVES.

Using No. 11 needles, cast on 58 (62) sts. and work in kI, p1 rib for 4 (4) ins. Change to No. 9 needles and pattern as Back, increasing one st. at each end of 5th and every following 6th row until 82 (86) sts. are on needle. Continue in pattern on these sts. until work measures 17 (17) ins. from commencement.

SHAPE HEAD.

Keeping in pattern, cast off 4 (6) sts. at beginning of next 2 rows, then K2tog. at beginning of every row until 36 (36) sts. remain.

Now K2tog. at each end of next 4 rows

Cast off remaining sts.

COLLAR.

Join both shoulder seams. With right side facing and commencing at Right Front Edge, rejoin wool and using No. 11 needles, pick up and knit 30 (30) sts. to right shoulder seam ; knit across 30 (30) sts. on spare needle ; pick up and knit 30 (30) sts. down to Left Front Edge. 90 (90) sts.

Work in kl, p1, rib for 6 (6) ins.

RIGHT FRONT BAND.

Using No. 11 needles cast on 16 (16) sts. Work 6 (6) rows in kl, pl rib.

Next row. Rib 7, cast off 2 sts., rib to end.

Next row. Rib 7, cast on 2 sts., rib to end.

Continue in rib, making further buttonholes at 11 ins. intervals (measuring from base of previous buttonhole) until 8 (8) buttonholes in all have been worked. Work 6 (6) rows more in rib.

Cast off in rib.

LEFT FRONT BAND.

Work as Right Front Band, omitting buttonholes.

TO MAKE UP.

Pin out and press each piece on wrong side under a damp cloth, avoiding all ribbing. Join side and sleeve seams. Sew in sleeves, placing centre of head of sleeve to shoulder seam. Sew front bands in position, placing right front over left front at centre front. Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes, placing 5 to fasten and 3 on reverse side of band for trimming. Press all seams.
