Here’s a very dramatic vintage 1974 red and black shawl to crochet! The shawl consists of a series of motifs crocheted to each other on the last round, then edged and fringed. So beautiful, and perfect for fall and winter!
SIZE: About 75″ long by 46″ deep.
MATERIALS: Columbia-Minerva Amy, 5 balls (Color A); 6 balls (Color B). Crochet hook size I, or size required to crochet to gauge.
GAUGE: Motif = about 5″.
FIRST MOTIF: With A, ch 5; join with sl st to form ring. Rnd 1: Ch 4 (counts as 1 dc and ch I), * dc in ring, ch 1, repeat from * 10 times more, sl st to 3rd ch of starting ch-4 to join, sl st in first ch-sp-12 dc. Rnd 2: Ch 5 (counts as 1 sc and ch* sc in next ch-sp, ch 3, repeat from * around, sl st to 2nd ch of starting ch-5 to join; sl st in ch-sp-12 ch-sps. Rnd 3: Pull up 1p on hook to about 1/2″, (yo, insert in same ch-sp and draw up a 1p to about 1/2″) 3 times, yo and through all 7 ips on hook (cluster made), ch 4, * work cluster in next sp, ch 4, repeat from * around; sl st to top of first cluster to join-12 clusters. Fasten off. Rnd 4: Join B in top of any cluster, ch 6 (counts as I sc, ch sc in same cluster (picot made), ch 4, * sc in next cluster, ch 4, sc in same cluster (picot made), ch 4, repeat from * around, sl st in 3rd ch of starting ch to join-12 picots. Fasten off. 2nd Motif: Work Rnds 1 through 3 as for First Motif. Rnd 4: Work as for First Motif until 10 picots are made, ch 4, sc in next cluster, ch 2, with wrong sides tog, sc in any cluster of First Motif, ch 2, sc in same cluster of 2nd motif (joining made), ch 4, sc in next cluster of 2nd motif, ch 2, sc in adjacent picot of first motif, ch 2 (joining made), sc in same cluster of 2nd motif, ch 4, sl st to join. Continue in this manner until 12 motifs are made, joining new motifs in picots opposite joinings of last motif made, leaving 4 picots unattached on each side of joinings. 13th Motif: Work as for First Motif until 8 picots of Rnd 4 are made, ch 4, sc in next cluster, ch 2, join to 2nd free picot below join of first motif. ch 4, sc in next cluster of 13th motif, join as before to next picot of first motif, ch 4, sc in next cluster of 13th motif, join to first free picot of 2nd motif, ch 4, sc in next cluster of 13th motif, join to next picot of 2nd motif, ch 4, sl st in starting ch. Fasten off. 14th Motif: Work as for first motif until 6 picots are made; continuing as before, join 7th and 8th picots of 14th motif to next 2 free motifs of 13th motif; join 9th and 10th picots to next 2 free picots of 2nd motif, join 11th and 12th picots to next 2 free picots of 3rd motif; complete Rnd 4 of 14th motif. Fasten off. Continue to make and join motifs in this manner having 1 less motif across each row until there are 3 motifs on the 10th row-75 motifs joined.
FINISHING: Edging: Row 1: With right side facing, leaving 4 picots free at top of 12th motif, attach B in next picot. ch 7 (counts as 1 sc. ch 5), sc in next picot. (ch 5, sc in next picot) twice, ch 5, * sc in ch-sp before joining, ch 5, sc in ch-sp below joining on next motif. ch 5, sc in next picot, ch 5, (sc in next picot, ch 5) 3 times, repeat from * around 2 sides of shawl; end sc in 4th picot after joining on first motif; turn. Row 2: Ch 7 (counts as I sc, ch 5), sc in ch-5 sp, * ch 5, sc in next ch-5 sp; repeat from * around; end sc in first ch-sp of last row worked; turn. Repeat Row 2 three times more; end last repeat by working across top of shawl as for Row 1. Fasten off. Fringe: Cut strands of B about 17″ long. Right side facing, with 5 strands for each fringe, fold in half, draw fold through ch-5 sp at edge, draw ends through fold, pull to tighten. Work fringe in each ch-sp along two lower edges.
