Sunny Honeycomb Cardigan Pattern

Spring colours, and cosy, too

Materials: (19, 20, 21) ozs. of Emu Scotch Double Knitting wool in yellow; 2 oz. in white and 1/2 oz. in green; 1 pair each of Nos. 6, 10 and 11 knitting needles and 7 buttons.

Tension: 9 sts. to 2 in and 8 rows to 1 in.

MEASUREMENTS; To suit 132 to 34, 35 to 37 and 38 to 40] in. bust sizes; length from shoulder, 23 in.; sleeve seam, 17+ in.

NOTE ON THE SIZES : The foil. instructions are for all sizes. The first set of figure.; in squared brackets applies to the 32 to 34 in. bust size; the second set to the 35 to 37 in. and the third set to the 38 to 40 in. bust. Figures not in squared brackets apply to all sizes.

THE BACK

Using No. 10 needles and Y wool, cast on [77, 85, 89] sts. and work 2 in. in k.1, p.1 rib, starting alt. rows with p.1 to keep rib correct. Change to No. 6 needles. 1st patt. row: K. 2nd row: P. Rep. 1st and 2nd patt. rows once. 5th row: K.4, (k. into next st. 4 rows below st. on needle, then let the original st. drop off needle in the usual way, k.3) to last St.. k.l. 6th row: P. 7th row: K. Rep. 6th and 7th rows once, then work 6th row again. 11th row: K. 2, (k. into next st. 4 rows below st. on needle, then let the original st. drop off needle in the usual way, k.3) to end, but finish last rep. with k.2, instead of k.3. 12th row: P. These 12 rows form the patt. Rep. them 8 times more, then work 1st to 6th rows again. To shape raglan armholes, dec. 1 st. at each end of next ,row and the foil. 4th row. Work 3 rows straight, then dec. 1 st. at each end of next row and every foil. alt. row until [43, 51, 55] sts. rem. Work 1 row. Break off wool and slip these sts. on to a spare needle.

THE LEFT FRONT –

* Using No. 10 needles and Y wool, cast on [37, 41, 45] sts. and work 2 in. in same rib as given at start of back. Change to No. 6 needles and rep. the 12 patt. rows of back 9 times, then work .1st to 6th rows again. To shape armhole, dec. 1 ,st. at start of next row and the foil. 4th row. Work 3 rows straight, then dec. 1 st. at start of next row and every foil. alt. row until [20, 24, 28] sts. rem. Work 1 row. Break off wool and slip these sts. on to a spare needle.

THE RIGHT FRONT

Work as given for left front from * to *. To shape armhole, dec. 1 st. at end of next row and the foil. 4th row. Work 3 rows straight, then dec. 1 st. at end of next row and every foil. alt. row until [20, 24, 281 sts. rem. Work I row. Break off wool and slip these sts. on to a spare needle. THE SLEEVES (both alike) Using No. 10 needles and Y wool, cast on 49 sts. and work 3 in. in same rib as given at start of back. Inc. row: (Rib 1, inc. in next st., rib 2, inc. in next st.) to last 4 sts., (rib 1, inc. in next st.) twice. (69 sts.) Change to No. 6 needles and rep. the 12 patt. rows of back 9 times,. then work the 1st to 6th rows again. To shape top, dec. 1 st. at each end of next row and the foil. 4th row. Work 3 rows straight, then dec. 1 st. at each end of next row and every foil. alt. row until 35 sts. rem. Work 1 row. Break off wool and slip these sts. on to a spare needle.
THE YOKE With right side of work facing you, assembles sic, on to a No. 10

This cardigan is so in tune with the new season—as you can see from our colour cover picture needle, as follows: With Y wool, k. the [20, 24, 28] sts. of right front, the 35 sts. of one sleeve, the [43, 51, 55] sts. of back, the 35 sts. of second sleeve and lastly the [20, 24, 28] sts. of left front. (153, 169, 181) sts. Break off Y; join on G and p.1 row. Work 7 rows in same rib as given at start of back. Break off G; join on W. Change to No. 11 needles and p.1 row, then rib 29 rows. Cast off loosely ribwise.

TO COMPLETE

Presswork very lightly on wrong side with a warm iron over a damp cloth, avoiding the ribbing. Join shaped edges of sleeve tops to corresponding edges of back and fronts. Join side and sleeve seams. Fold W ribbing of yoke in half and slip stitch down on wrong side.. The Buttonhole Border: Using No. 11 needles and Y wool, cast on 14 sts. and work 6 rows in kJ, p.1 rib. 1st buttonhole row: Rib 5, cast off 4, rib to end. 2nd buttonhole row: Rib S. cast on 4, rib 5. Rib 24 rows, then rep. the 2 buttonhole rows. Rep. last 26 rows S times more. Rib another 6 rows. Cast off. The Button Border: Using No. 11 needles and Y wool, cast on 14 sts. and work 170 rows in k.l. p.1 rib. Cast off. Sew borders to front edges. Add buttons.
