MATERIALS: Of Patons II I Beehive Fingering, 3-ply
(“Patonised” shrink-resist finish), 3 ozs, in grey, 2 ozs. in purple, and about f oz. each navy and white. A pair each No. 10 and No. 12 “Beehive” needles. Four press-studs.
MEASUREMENTS: To fit 32-34-inch bust; length from top of shoulder, 19 inches; sleeve seams, 41 inches.
TENSION: 7 1/2 stitches to an inch, unpressed, on No. 10 needles.
BACK AND FRONT ALIKE N.B.—Pattern is as follows:* Navy, 2 rows knit. White, 2 rows stocking-stitch. Navy, 2 rows knit.* Purple, 26 rows stocking-stitch. Repeat from * to * again. Grey, 26 rows stocking-stitch.
With No. 12 needles, cast on 104 sts. and work 4f inches k. 2, p. 2 rib, using grey wool. Change to No. 10 needles and pattern, increasing at each end of 5th and every following 4th row until there are 128 sts.
Work straight until side measures 11 f inches. Shape armholes by casting off 7 sts. at beginning of next 2 rows, then k. 2 tog. at each end of every alternate row until 96 remain. Work straight until work measures 16f inches. After second repeat of pattern, continue throughout in grey stocking-stitch.
Shape for neck: Work 12, cast off 72, work 12. Continue on last 12 sts. until work measures 18i inches. Cast off. Join to other 12 sts., neck edge, and work to correspond.
With right side of work facing, navy wool, and No. 10 needles, pick up and knit 32 down left shoulder, 72 across front and 32 up other shoulder. NEXT ROW: k. 30, k. 2 tog. twice, knit to last 34 sts., k. 2 tog. twice, knit to end. Change to white wool. NEXT ROW: k. 28, slip 2, k. I, pass slipped stitches over, k. 2 tog., knit to last 33 sts., slip 1, k. 1, p.s.s.o., k. 3 tog., knit to end. Purl back. Change to navy. Knit 27, slip 1, k. 1, p.s.s.o., k. 3 tog., knit to last 32 sts., slip 2, k. 1, p.s.s.o:, k. 2 tog., knit to end. Knit back. Change to purple. Increase in 1st st., then k. 24, slip 2, k. 1, p.s.s.o., k. 2 tog., knit to last 30 sts., slip 1, k. 1, p.s.s.o., k. 3 tog., knit to end, increase in last stitch. Purl back. NEXT ROW: k. 25, slip 1, k. 1, p.s.s.o., k. 3 tog., knit to last 30 sts., slip 2, k. 1, p.s.s.o., k. 2 tog., knit to end. Purl back. Continue decreasing thus at corners and increasing at each end of next and every following 4th row until 18 purple rows are done. Finish with stripes as for first 6 rows, still decreasing at each corner every alternate row by taking 2 tog. twice, thus decreasing 2 sts., instead of 3. Cast off.
SLEEVES
With No. 12 needles and grey wool, cast on 80 sts. and work 1 inch k. 2, p. 2 rib. Change to No. 10 needles and pattern, increasing at each end of next and every following 3rd row until there are 96 sts.
Work straight until side edge measures 4i inches, when you should be starting the grey stripe. Continue throughout in grey and shape for top. K. 2 tog. at beginning of every row until 40 remain. Cast off.
TO MAKE UP
Press pieces on wrong side lightly under a damp cloth. Join side, one shoulder and sleeve seams. Insert sleeves. Finish off one shoulder with a row of double crochet to neaten for about half its length; sew up remainder. Sew on press-studs.
What does knit 7f stiches mean…
I’m familiar with most knitting abbreviations, but I am not aware of that…
Perhaps it is because the pattern is vintage, in which case can you direct me to the correct page or reference to understand what may have replaced the ‘abr’ for modern usage.
