Starring Stripes Jumper Knitting Pattern

YOU knit this little jumper “sideways on,” and then pick up the edge stitches’ for the ribbing at waist, neck, and cuffs—all quite simple, and so effective. The design is specially good to wear with a suit, the neat round neckline fitting under any shape of the collar. Long sleeves can be substituted for short if preferred; instructions are included.

MATERIALS: 5 ozs. of Paton’s “Rose” Fingering, 3-ply, 2 ozs. green, No. 2022, and fawn, No. 1600; oz. rust, No. 2044. 2 ozs. Paton’s Super (or “Bee­hive”) Scotch Fingering, 3-ply, I oz. yellow, No. 2075, and 1 oz. brown, No. 2020. A set of four No. 1o, and a pair No. 9 “Beehive” needles. Two buttons.

MEASUREMENTS: To fit bust 33-35 inches; length, 18 inches; sleeve seam, 4 inches or i8i inches.

TENSION: 6 stitches to an inch in width; 9 rows to an inch in depth.

THE BACK

This is started at side seam. With No. 9 needles and rust wool, cast on 52 stitches. 1ST ROW: Knit, increas­ing in last stitch. 2ND ROW: Knit. Repeat these two rows once.

Change to green, and repeat 1st and 2nd rows. Change to fawn. 7TH ROW: As ist. 8TH ROW: Purl. Repeat last 2 rows once.

Change to yellow, and repeat 1st and 2nd rows twice. Change to brown, and repeat 1st and 2nd rows once. Change to fawn. 17TH ROW: As 1st row. 18TH ROW: Purl. Repeat last 2 rows once.

These 20 rows form the pattern repeated throughout. Repeat them twice, finishing with 8z stitches on needle **.

The increasing (which has shaped the raglan shoulder) is now discontinued. Keeping to the colour arrangement as before, k. 2 tog. at shaped edge in next and every following 7th row, 6 times in all (76 stitches remain). Work 1 row straight, then increase at the same edge in next and .every 7th row, 6 times in all (82 stitches). Work 2 rows straight after last increase.

K. 2 tog. at shaped edge in the next and then every alternate row till 52 stitches remain. Finish the fawn stripe; then cast off.

With green wool and No. 10 needles (right side of work facing), knit up 8o stitches along straight lower edge for welt. Work 3 inches in k. 1, p. I rib, cast off with a No. 9 needle.

THE FRONT

Work as for back to **. Now, keeping to the same colour arrangement, discontinue the increasing, and instead k. 2 tog. at shaped edge in next and every 3rd row, 12 times in all (70 stitches). Work 7 rows straight after last decrease.

Increase at shaped edge in the next and every 3rd row, 12 times in all (82 stitches). Work 3 rows straight after last increase.

K. 2 tog. at shaped edge in next and every alternate row till 52 stitches remain. Finish the pattern, then cast off.

Work welt ribbing as for back.

SHORT SLEEVES

Right Sleeve: With No. 9 needles and rust wool, cast on 12 stitches. 1ST ROW: Knit. 2ND ROW: Knit, increasing in last stitch. Repeat these two rows once.

Change to green wool; repeat 1st and 2nd rows once. Change to fawn wool. 7TH ROW: Knit. 8TH ROW: Purl, increasing in last stitch. Repeat last 2 rows once.

Change to yellow wool; repeat 1st and 2nd rows twice. Change to brown wool; repeat same two rows once. Change to fawn. 17TH ROW: Knit. 18TH ROW: Purl, increasing in last stitch. Repeat last 2 rows once.
