Nordic Sweater and Cap Knitting Pattern

These directions are for size 12. Changes for sizes 14 and 16 are in parentheses.

MATERIALS

SPINNERIN Marvel Twist or Nylaine Germantown

(4 oz. skeins) — 5 Main Color (M C) SPINNERIN Midget Nylaine Knitting Worsted (20 yd.

cards) — 2 each Colors A, B, C and D 1 pair straight knitting needles No. 8

1 24-inch circular needle No. 8

1 set d p needles No. 8

GAUGE: 5 sts = 1 inch             7 rows = 1 inch

SWEATER

BACK: With M C and No. 8 needles, cast on 90(94-100) sts. K 1, P 1 in ribbing for 21/4 inches, inc 1 st at end of last row. Work even in stockinette st on 91(95-101) sts until piece measures 141/2 inches, ending with a P row and dec 1 st at end of last row. SHAPE RAGLAN ARM­HOLES: Row 1: K 2, sl 1, K 1, psso, K to last 4 sts, K

2 tog, K 2. Row 2: Purl. Repeat these 2 rows 6(7-8) times more. Put remaining 76(78-82) sts on a holder.

FRONT: Work in same manner as back.

SLEEVES: With M C and No. 8 needles, cast on 36(40-44) sts. K 1, P 1 in ribbing for 21/2 inches. P the next row, inc 14 sts evenly across row. Work in stockinette st on 50(54-58) sts, inc 1 st each end of needle every 1 inch 10 times. Work even on 70(74-78) sts until piece meas ores 18(18-181/2) inches, ending with a P row. SHAPE RAGLAN: Row 1: K 2, sl 1, K 1, psso, K to last 4 sts, K 2 tog, K 1. Row 2: Purl. Repeat these 2 rows 6(7-8) times more. Put remaining 56(58-60) sts on a holder.

NOTE: In working yoke, be sure to carry all colors not in use very loosely across back of work, so yoke is flat.

YOKE: Starting at center back, with M C and circular needle K 38(39-41) sts of one-half of back, K 56(58-60) sts of one sleeve, K 76(78-82) sts of front, K 56(58-60) sts of other sleeve, K 38(39-41) sts of other half of back — 264(272-284) sts on needle. Join and, knitting round and round in stockinette st, work first 2 rows of chart. Round 3: With M C, knit around. Round 4: With M C, knit around, dec 16(24-20) sts at even intervals. Round 5: With M C, knit 248(248-264) sts. Round 6: With M C, knit around, dec 40(40-44) sts at even intervals. Rounds 7 through 18: Work Rows 7 through 18 of chart. Round 19: Repeat Round 3. Round 20: Repeat Round 6 Round 21: With M C. K 168(168-176) sts. Rounds 22 and 23: Work Rows 22 and 23 of chart. Round 24: Re­peat Round 3. Round 25: Repeat Round 6. Change to d p needles. Round 26: With M C, K 128(128-132) sts. Rounds 27 through 35: Work Rows 27 through 35 of chart. Round 36: Repeat Round 3. Round 37: Repeat Round 6. Round 38: With M C, K 88 sts. Rounds 39 and 40: Work Rows 39 and 40 of chart. With M C, K 1, P 1 in ribbing for 3/4 inch. COLLAR: Work in ribbing, binding off 3 sts in center front. Work back and forth in ribbing on 85 sts for 4 inches more. Bind off loosely in ribbing.

FINISHING: Sew underarm and sleeve seams. Sew raglan seams. Block to size.

Nordic Sweater and Cap Chart

CAP

With M C and d p needles, cast on 88 sts (30 sts on each of two needles and 28 sts on third needle). Join, being careful not to twist sts. K 1, P 1 in ribbing for 1 inch. Work even in stockinette st for 1 inch. Work Rows 1 and 2 of chart. Round 3: With M C, knit. Rounds 4 and 5: With M C, knit around, dec 10 sts at even intervals. Rounds 6 through 17: Work Rows 6 through 17 of chart on 68 sts. With M C, K 5 rounds even. DEC ROUND: * K 6, K 2 tog, repeat from * ending K 4 — 8 sts de­creased. Repeat this dec round EVERY ROUND until 4 sts remain, having 1 st less between dec each time. Break off yarn, leaving a 12 inch end. Run this end through 4 sts on needle, draw up tightly and fasten off. TASSEL: Cut a piece of cardboard 3 inches wide and 7 inches long. Wind M C around 7 inch length. S1 yarn underneath one end of tassel _and tie securely. Make a 5 inch chain. Cut yarn at other end. Sew chain to top of cap. Wind a piece of yarn around tassel 1 inch below top and tie securely. Cut ends of tassel evenly. Tack tassel to cap at top of ribbing in back. Steam lightly.
