Mondrian Style Afghan Crochet Pattern

This is a fantastic vintage 1960s Mondrian style/stained-glass effect blanket to crochet! Afghan-stitch throw is worked on a giant-size hook with two strands of yarn. Five strips, each with six colors are joined for a stained-glass effect.

SIZE: 54″ x 62″.

MATERIALS: Knitting worsted or Nantuk 4-ply knitting yarn, 8 ozs. each of green (A), black (C), blue (E) and white (F); 10 ozs. red (B); 6 ozs. gold (D). Plastic crochet hook size Q.

GAUGE: Each strip (18 sts) 10″; 9 rows = 7″.

AFGHAN STITCH: Row 1: Keeping all 1ps on hook, draw up a 1p in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across; Figure 1. There are the same number of 1ps on hook as were chained.

To Work Lps Off: Yo hook and through first 1p, * yo hook, pull through next 2 1ps, repeat from * across until 1 1p remains; Figure 2. Lp that remains on hook always counts as first st of next row.

Row 2: Keeping all 1ps on hook, sk first vertical bar, pull up a 1p under next vertical bar and under each vertical bar across; Figure 3. Work 1ps off as before. Repeat row 2 for afghan stitch.

To Change Colors: With last 1p on hook, ch 1 with new color. Break off and join colors as needed.

AFGHAN: Note: Work with 2 strands of yarn throughout.

First Strip: With 2 strands of A, ch 18. Work in afghan stitch in fol­lowing colors and rows: 8 rows A, 1 row C, 9 rows B, 1 row C, 4 rows D, 1 row C, 10 rows E, 1 row C, 6 rows

A, 1 row C, 2 rows F, 1 row C, 16 rows B, 1 row C, 9 rows F, 1 row C and 6 rows E-78 rows. End off.

Slip Stitch Edging: With C, make 1p on hook. From right side, insert hook in hole next to first st of row 1, pull 1p through to right side and through 1p on hook, * insert hook next to first st in row above, pull 1p through and through 1p on hook, repeat from * to top of strip, sl st in each sp across top of strip, sl st in each sp down second side of strip, sl st in each sp across bottom of strip: End off.

Second Strip: With E, ch 18. Work in rows of afghan stitch as follows: 6 rows E, 1 row C, 4 rows D, 1 row

C, 4 rows A, 1 row C, 4 rows E, 1
row C, 16 rows F, 1 row C, 8 rows

B, 1 row C, 16 rows D, 1 row C, 10 rows A, 1 row C and 2 rows F-78 rows. Finish as for first strip. Sew second strip to first strip having starting chains at same edge.

Third Strip: With B, ch 18. Work in rows of afghan stitch as follows: 3 rows B, 1 row C, 8 rows F, 1 row C,2 rows D, 1 row C, 15 rows B, 1 row C, 9 rows D, 1 row C, 11 rows 1 row C, 2 rows F, 1 row C and 21 rows E-78 rows. Finish as for first strip. Sew to second strip.

Fourth Strip: With F, ch 18. Work in rows of afghan stitch as follows: 3 rows F, 1 row C, 2 rows B, 1 row C, 5 rows E, 1 row C, 15 rows A, 1 row C, 8 rows F, 1 row C, 14 rows E, 1 row C, 9 rows B, 1 row C, 5 rows F, 1 row C and 9 rows D-78 rows. Finish as for first strip. Sew to third strip.

Fifth Strip: With A, ch 18. Work in rows of afghan stitch as follows: 11 rows A, 1 row C, 5 rows B, 1 row C, 5 rows F, 1 row C, 7 rows E, 1 row C, 3 rows D, 1 row C, 12 rows 1 row C, 6 rows F, 1 row C, 12 rows A, 1 row C and 9 rows B-78 rows. Finish as for first strip. Sew to fourth strip.

Edging: With 2 strands of C, make 1p on hook. From right side, sc in corner st at one long edge; working through center of sl sts made on edge, sc in each st along edge. Sc around afghan in this manner, mak­ing 3 sc at each corner. SI st in first sc; end off. Steam-press.
