How to Knit Jacket with Hood

TENSION

11 sts. and 14 rows equal 5 cm. (2 ins.) No. 4mm. (8) needles.

Success depends on working to correct tension.

NOTE: Check tension before commencing and if there are less stitches to 5cm. (2ins.) than the number stated, change to a finer needle. 14 more stitches to 5cm. (2ins.) than stated, change to a larger needle.

CASTING ON – THUMB METHOD

2m. (78ins.) from the end twist the wool (yarn) round the left thumb to make a loop and knit this loop on to the needle from the ball of wool (yarn). Repeat till the required number of stitches are on the needle making the loop from the 2m. (78ins.) and knitting from the ball. This method of casting on should always be used.

To work larger sizes follow figures in parenthesis ( ). When only one set of figures is given this applies to all sizes.

BACK

Using No. 3’/mm. (10) needles and C., cast on 95(101;107;113)sts.

1st row. P1, * k1, p1, repeat from * to end.

2nd row. K1, * p1, k1, repeat from * to end. Repeat the last 2 rows until work measures 13cm. (5ins.) decreasing one st. at end of the last row. 94(100;106;112)sts.

Change to No. 4mm. (8) needles and M.; and work in st.st. (1st row – knit) until work measures 36cm. (14ins.).

SHAPE ARMHOLES (Right side facing): Cast off 6sts. at beginning of next 2 rows.

Decrease one st. at each end of every row until 70(74;78;82)sts. remain.

Continue straight until work measures 56(56; 57;57)cm. 22(22;22.1/2;22.1/2)ins.

SHAPE SHOULDERS (Right side facing):

Cast off 7(7;8;8)sts. at beginning of next 2 r9ws.

Cast off 7(8;8;8)sts. at beginning of next 2 rows.

Cast off 8(8;8;9)sts. at beginning of next 2 rows.

Cast off remaining 26(28;30;32)sts.

LEFT FRONT

Using No. 3%mm. (10) needles and C., cast on 47(51;53;57)sts. and work in rib as given for Back decreasing one st. at end of the last row for 86cm. (34ins.) and 97cm. (38ins.) sizes only. 47(50;53;56)sts.

Change to No. 4mm. (8) needles and M. and work in st.st. (1st row – knit) for 2.5cm. (1 in.).

DIVIDE FOR POCKET (Right side facing): K25(28;31;34)sts., leave remaining 22sts. on a thread. Cast on 20sts. (Pocket lining).

Work 34 rows in st.st. (1st row – purl).

Next row. Cast off 20sts., purl to end, leave these sts. on a thread.

Return to 22sts. left on a thread and work 36 rows straight.

Now working across all sts. continue in st.st. (1st row – knit) until work measures 36cm. (14ins.).

SHAPE ARMHOLE (Right side facing): Next row. Cast off 6sts., knit to end.

Next row. Purl.

Keeping front edge straight decrease one st. at armhole edge on every row until 35(37;39;41)sts. remain. Continue straight until work measures 51cm. (20ins.).

SHAPE NECK (Wrong side facing):

Next row. Cast off 8sts., purl to end.

Keeping armhole straight decrease one st. at Neck Edge on every row until 22(23;24;25)sts. remain.

Continue straight until work measures 56(56; 57;571cm. 22(22;221/2;221/2)ins.

SHAPE SHOULDER (Right side facing):

Cast off 7(7;8;8)sts. at beginning of next row and 7(8;8;8)sts. at the beginning of the following alternate row.

Next row. Purl.

Cast off remaining 8(8;8;9)sts.

RIGHT FRONT

Work to correspond with Left Front reversing pocket and all shapings.

SLEEVES

Using No. 3-1/4mm. (10) needles and C., cast on 55(55;59;59)sts. and work in rib as given for Back for 8cm. (3ins.) decreasing one st. at the end of the last row. 54(54;58;58)sts.

Change to No. 4mm. (8) needles and M.

Next row. K1(1;3;3)sts., * increase once in next st., k2, repeat from * to last 2(2;4;4)sts., increase once in next st., k1(1;3;3). 72(72;76;76)sts.

Next row. Purl.

Continue in st.st. (1st row – knit) decreasing one st. at each end of 9th and every following 10th row until 64(64;68;68)sts. remain.

Work 16 rows straight.

Increase one st. at each end of next and every following 10th row until there are 72(72;76;76)sts. on needle.

Continue straight until work measures 43cm. (17ins.).

SHAPE TOP (Right side facing):

Cast off one st. at the beginning of every row until 38sts. remain.

Cast off 2sts. at the beginning of every row until

18sts. remain. Cast off.

POCKET EDGINGS

Using No. 3-1/4mm. (10) needles and C., pick up and knit 31sts. evenly along the outside edge of the pocket.1st row. K1, * p1, k1, repeat from * to end.

2nd row. P1, *•k1, p1, repeat from * to end. Repeat 1st and 2nd rows once more, then 1st row once more. Cast off in fib.

HOOD

Using No. 4mm. (8) needles and M., cast on 133sts. and work in rib as given for Back for 10cm. (4ins.) ending on the right side of work. Now change to st.st. (1st row – knit) until work measures 23cm. (9ins.) ending on the wrong side. Cast off 50sts. at beginning of next 2 rows. Continue on remaining sts. for a further 23cm.

(9ins.) ending on the right side.

Next row. * P2tog., repeat from * to last st., p1 Cast off.

TO MAKE UP

See Pressing Instructions. Join side, shoulder and sleeve seams. Set-in sleeves. Join the back of the hood. Turn back the brim of the hood for 5cm. (2ins.) and placing centre of the hood to center back of neck sew in position all round neck working through the double fabric on the brim. Sew pocket linings in position on the wrong side. Sew sides of pocket edgings. Insert zip. Press all seams.
