Fluffy Angora Sweater Knitting Pattern

Angora sweaters made a comeback in the 1980s big time. So soft, fluffy, furry and feminine! This beautiful knitting pattern is from the Fall 1980 edition of McCall’s Needlework & Crafts magazine. The gorgeous sweater is knit in stockinette, ribbed gently at cuffs. Elastic shapes the waist, gossamer ruffling trim throat, cuffs and off-center banding.

SIZES: Directions for small size (6-8). Changes for medium size (10-12) and large size (14) are in parentheses.

Body Bust Size: 301/2″-311/2″ (321/2″-34″; 36″).

Finished Bust Size: 34″ (38″-41″).

MATERIALS: Anny Blatt Angor’ Anny (70% angora, 20% wool, 10% nylon), 8 (9-10) 20-gram balls. Knitting needles Nos. 6 and 8. 13/4 yards net ruching. Round elastic. Matching sewing thread. GAUGE: 5 sts = 1″; 13 rows = 2″ (No. 8 needles).

SWEATER: BACK: Beg at lower edge, with No. 6 needles, cast on 76 (80-86) sts. Work in ribbing of k 1, p 1 for 5″, inc 9 (15-17) sts evenly spaced across last row —85 (95-103) sts. Change to No. 8 needles. Work in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row) until piece measures 14″ from start, end p row. Check gauge; piece above ribbing should measure 17″ (19″- 201/2″) wide.

Shape Armholes: Bind off 4 (6-6) sts at beg of next 2 rows. Dec 1 st each side every other row 4 (5-6) times-69 (73-79) sts. Work even until armholes measure 7″ (71/2″-8″) above first bound-off sts. Shape Shoulders: Bind off 6 (7-8) sts at beg of next 4 rows. Bind off remaining 45 (45-47) sts.

FRONT: Work same as for back until armholes measure 5″ (51/2″-6″) above first bound-off sts, end p row-69 (73-79) sts.

Shape Neck And Shoulders: Next Row: K 22 (24-26), drop yarn; join another strand of yarn, bind off center 25 (25-27) sts, finish row-22 (24-26) sts each side. Working on both sides at once, with separate strands of yarn, bind off 2 sts at beg of each neck edge 5 times-12 (14-16) sts each side. Work even until armholes measure same as back. Bind off 6 (7-8) sts at beg of each arm side twice.

SLEEVES: Beg at lower edge, with No. 6 needles, cast on 44 (48-54) sts. Work in ribbing of k 1, p 1 for 2″, inc 4 (8-8) sts across last row-48 (56-62) sts. Change to No. 8 needles. Work in stockinette st, inc 1 st each side every 2″ 6 (5-5) times-60 (66-72) sts. Work even until piece measures 17″ (171/2″-18″) from start or desired length to underarm, end p row. Check gauge; piece above last inc row should measure 12″ (13″-141/2″) wide.

Shape Cap: Bind off 3 (4-4) sts at beg of next 2 rows. Dec 1 st each side every other row 4 times-46 (50-56) sts. Work even until cap measures 61/2″ (7″-71/2″) above first bound-off sts, end p row.

Next Row: K 2 tog across-23 (25-28) sts. Next Row: P 1 (1-0), (p 2 tog) across-12 (13-14) sts. Bind off tightly.

FINISHING: Sew shoulder seams; with center top of cap at shoulder seam, sew in sleeves. Sew side and sleeve seams. Sew ruching around neck edge, continue down left front, end at top of ribbing (see picture). Sew ruching around each sleeve above ribbing. Weave elastic around wrong side of the neck edge and top of waist ribbing; adjust elastic to fit and tie ends securely.
