CROSS-KNIT CUTIE

a shirt with a new slant

MATERIALS: [18, 18, 19J ors. of Robin Casino Crepe (4-ply); 1 pair each of Nos. 10 and 12 knitting needles; a No. 12 cir­cular knitting needle; 3 buttons.

TENSION: 9 sts. to 1 in. and 19 rows to 2 in.

MEASUREMENTS: To suit [34 to 36, 36 to 38 and 38 to 40] in. bust sizes; length from shoulder 24, 24+, 25j in. ; sleeve seam. [51, 6, 61] in.

NOTES ON THE PATT: To “twist 2 A”, taking point of right-hand needle behind 1st st. on left-hand needle k. into back of 2nd st., then k. into front of 1st st. and slip both sts. off needle tog.

To “twist 2 B”, k. into front of 2nd st. on left-hand needle, then k. 1st st. and slip both sts. off needle tog.

THE BACK

* With No. 12 needles, cast on [170, 180, 190] sts. and work 15 rows in k.l, p.1 rib. Next row: P. Change to No. 10 needles and proceed in patt.

2 A, twist 2 B, p.1) to end. 4th row: (K.1, p.4) to end. 5th row: K.1, (twist 2 B, p.1, twist 2 A) to last 4 sts., twist 2 B, p.1, k.l. 6th row: P.1, (k.1, p.4) to last 4 sts., k.1, p.3. 7th row: (Twist 2 B, p.1, twist 2 A) to end. 8th row: P.2, (k.1, p.4) to last 3 sts., kJ, p.2. 9th row: K.1, (p.1, twist 2 A, twist 2 B) to last 4 sts., p.1, twist

To shape armholes, cast off 2 sts. at start of next 2 rows. * Now dec. 1 st. at each end of next row and evert foil. alt. row until [140, 144, 148 sts. rem. Cont. on these sts. unti back measures [24, 24+,

25J ins. ,from start, finishing with a wrong side row.

To shape shoulders, cast off 5 sts. at start of next 6 rows and 10 sts. at start of the foil. 4 rows and [10, 12, 14] sts. at start of next 2 rows. Cast off rem. 50 sts. for back neck.

THE FRONT

Work as given for back from to *. Now dec. 1 st. at each end of next row and every fall. alt. row until [148, 154, 160] sts. rem. Work

1 row. Now divide sts. for front opening.

Next row: Take 2 toy., patt. [70, 73, 76] as.; t. Leaving rem. sts. on a spare needle, cont. only on first set. ** Work 1 row, then dec. 1 st. at armhole edge on next row and the foil. [2, 3, 4] alt. rows. Work straight until front measures [22, 221, 23] in. from start, finish­ing at inner edge.

To shape neck, cast off 8 sts. at start of next row, then dec. 1 st. at neck edge on each of the next 12 rows, after which dec. 1 st. at same edge on the foil. 3 alt. rows.

To shape shoulder, cast off 5 sts. at start of next 3 rows which beg. at armhole edge and 10 sts. at start of the foil. 2 alt. rows; work 1 row, then cast off rem. [10, 12, 14] sts. ** With right side of work facing you, join wool to inner end of sts. on spare needle. cast off next 4 sts., patt. to last 2 sts., take

2 tog. Now work as given for first side from ** to **.

THE SLEEVES (both alike)

With No. 12 needles, cast on [106, 110, 116] As. and work 10 rows in k.1, p.1 rib. Next row: Rib [8, 5, 13] As., (inc. in next st., rib 10) to last {10 6, 151 sts., inc. in next st., rib [9, 5, 14], Next row: P. these [115, 120, 125] sts. Change to No. 10 needles and rep. the 1st to 4th patt. rows as riven for back, then keeping continuity of the patt., inc. 1 st. at each end of next row and every foil. 4th row until there are[135, 140, 145] sts. Work straight until sleeve measures [5+, 6, 61] in, from start, finishing with a wrong side row.

To shape top, cast off 2 sts. at start of next 2 rows, then dec. 1 st. at each end of next row and every foil. alt. row until [103, 102, 101] sts. rem. after which dec. 1 st. at each end of every row until [45, 44, 43] sts. rem. Cast off 4 sts. at start of next 4 rows. Cast off rem. sts.

TO COMPLETE

Press work lightly on wrong side with a warm Iron over a damp cloth, avoiding the ribbing. Join shoulder seams, set in sleeves, then join side and sleeve seams. Sew cast-on edge of collar to neck, starting and finishing at inner edge of the 8-st. cast-off groups. With right side of main part facing you, join wool to base of front opening and using the No. 12 circular needle, pick up and k. 61 sts. along the row-ends of opening and 9 sts. from the cast-off group at neck; mark first and last of these 9 sts. with coloured threads. With same needle, pick up and p. 31 sts. from side of collar, p. the 141 sts. from spare needle and mark first and last of these sts. with coloured threads, then pick up and p. 31 sts. along other side of collar. Now pick up and k. 9 sts. from the cast-off group at this side of neck and mark first and last of these 9 sts. with coloured threads, then pick up and k. 61 sts. along this side of front opening.

Work backwards and forwards in rows on these 343 sts. thus:

1st row: (K.1, p.11 to 1 from end, k.l.

2nd row: Rib 4, (cast off 4 sts. for a buttonhole, rib until there are 21 sts. on left-hand needle after the cast-off group) twice, cast off 4, rib to first marked st., p.u.p., k. marked st., p.u.p. rib to within 2 sts. of 2nd marked st., p.2 tog., k. marked st., p.2 tog., rib to 3rd marked st., p.u.p., k. marked st., p•u•p., rib to 4th marked st., p.u.p., k. marked st., p.u.p., rib to within 2 sts. of 5th marked st.,p.2 tog., k. marked St., p.2 tog., rib to 6th marked st., p.u.., k. marked st., P.u•p., rib to end.

3rd row: Rib to end, but p. each marked st, and cast on 4 sts, over

each group cast-off on preceding row,

4th row: As 2nd row, but omit the

Lap Cast off loosely ribwise.

right border over left and sew row-ends to the cast-off group at the centre. Add buttons.
