Classic Raglan Sports Jumper

Sizes : 34, 36 and 38 ins. bust

IMPORTANT—Marriner’s D.K. Wool goes a long may to the oz. and the amount of wool and sizes quoted below are only applicable when using this brand of double knitting wool.

MATERIALS-12 (13, 14) ozs. Marriner’s D.K. Double Knitting Wool. 1 pair No. 10 and 1 pair No. 9 Milwards Phantom Knitting Needles.

MEASUREMENTS—Bust, 34 (36, 38) inches. Length, 21 (219, 22)) inches. Sleeve seam, 17 (17, 18) inches.

TENSION-111 sts. to 2 inches.

ABBREVIATIONS — K., knit; P., purl; st., stitch; st. st., stocking stitch; inc., increase; dec., decrease; tog., together; ins., inches; beg., beginning; rep., repeat; t.b.1., through back of loop.Instructions are given for the first size, and any alterations for 2nd and 3rd sizes are given in brackets, thus 34 (36, 38).

BACK

With No. 10 needles cast on 90 (96, 102) sts. and work in K.1, P.1 rib for 36 (36, 40) rows.

Change to No. 9 needles and work in st. st. for 6 rows

Inc. at each of the next row and then at each end of every following 8th row until there are 100 (106, 112) sts. on needle.

Continue until work measures 12-3/4 (13-1/4, 13-3/4) ins. from the beginning.

Shape Armholes

Cast off 4 (5, 6) sts. at beg. of next 2 rows ( 92 (96, 100) sts.)

Commence raglan shaping as follows

K.1, K.2 tog., t.b.1., K. until 3 sts. remain, K.2 to K.1.

Next row – K.1, P. to last st., K.1.

Repeat these 2 rows until 28 ( 30, 32) sts. remain on needle. Leave on a spare needle.

FRONT

Work as for Back until there are 50 (52, 54) sts. on needle during raglan shaping, ending with a purl row.

Now shape for neck while at the same time keep-Cast off 4 (5, 6) sts. at beg. of next 2 rows. ing the raglan decreases correct. Continue as [92 (96, 100) sts..] follows Next row—K.1, K.2 tog., t.b.l., K.17, cast off loosely 10 (12, 14) sts., K.17 including st. on needle, K.2 tog., K.1. Turn and continue on this last set of sts. Next row—K.1. P. to end. Next row—K.2 tog., t.b.l., K. to the last 3 sts., K.2 tog., K.1. Continue dec. at both edges in this manner on
every alternate row until all sts. are wo, ked off. Work other side of neck to match. working dec. sts. at armhole through back of loops and not those at neck edge.

SLEEVES (both alike)

With No. 10 needles cast on 56 (58. 60) sts. and work in K.1, P.1 rib for 26 rows.

Change to No. 9 needles and work 6 rows in st. st. Inc. at both ends of the next row and at each end of every following 8th row until there are 74 (78, 82) sts. on needle. Continue until work measures 17 (17. 18) ins. from beg.

Cast off 4 (5, 6) sts. at beg. of next 2 rows. [66 (68, 70) sts.]

Commence raglan shaping as follows

K.1, K.2 tog., t.b.l., K. until 3 sts. rem., K.2 tog., K.1.

Next row—K.1, purl to the last st., K.1.

Rep. these 2 rows until 2 sts. remain, leave on a safety pin.

POLO NECK

With No. 9 needles and right side of work facing, knit across 28 (30, 32) sts. left on needle for across back of neck. Work ins. in K.1, P.1 rib, then change to No. 10 needles and work in rib for 3f ins. Cast off loosely.

Now with right side of work facing and using No. 9 needles knit 2 sts. from top of first sleeve, then pick up and knit about 51 (53, 55) sts. across front and knit a further 2 from second sleeve. Work I ins. in K.1, P.1 rib. Change to No. 10 needles and work 3i ins. in rib. Cast off loosely.

TO COMPLETE

Press pieces under a damp cloth with a hot iron. Set in sleeves so that decreases match exactly. Sew side, sleeve and polo collar seams. Using a narrow backstitch for stocking stitch portions and oversewing welt, cuffs and polo collar. Press all seams.
