1930’s Jumper Pattern

A MODEL of inspired simplicity, this jumper, all in stocking-stitch except for the ribbed welt and that clever touch of simulated smocking at the neck. Narrow hems are a good-looking finish for collar and cuffs.

MATERIALS: 7 ozs. Paton’s Super (or ” Beehive “) Scotch Fingering, 3 – ply (original uses blue, No. 8455). A pair No. 12 and a pair No. to “Beehive” needles. A small button.

MEASUREMENTS: To fit 33-35-inch bust; length from top of shoulder, 181 inches; sleeve seam, 18 inches.

TENSION: 8 stitches to an inch, measured over stocking-stitch before pressing.

BACK

With No. 12 needles cast on to8 stitches and work 3 inches in k. 2, p. 2 rib. Change to No. 10 needles and stocking-stitch, increasing at each end of needle in every 6th row until there are 132 stitches on the needle. Carry on straight until .work measures 12-1/2 inches from commencement.

Here shape armholes. Cast off 8 stitches at beginning of the next 2 rows, then decrease at each end of following 6 rows (104 stitches on needle). Carry on straight on remaining stitches until 17 inches have been worked from commencement. Here divide work for back opening. Work -1 an inch on first 52 stitches, leaving remainder on a spare needle; then, with right side of work facing, cast off 6, knit to end. 2ND ROW: Cast off 12, purl to end. 3RD Row: Cast off 6, knit to end. 4TH ROW: Cast off 5, purl to end. 5TH ROW: Cast off 6, knit to last 2 stitches, k. 2 tog. 6TH ROW: Purl 2 tog., purl to end. 7TH Row: As 5th. 8TH ROW: As 6th. 9TH ROW: Cast off. Work remaining 52 stitches to correspond.

FRONT

Work as for back until armhole shapings have been done. Now start smocking pattern.

1ST ROW: k. 22, * slip next 5 stitches on to a spare needle, bring these forward and place in front of next 5 on left-hand needle. knit these stitches together (i.e., 1 from front needle together with i from back needle). Repeat from * to last 22 stitches, k. 22.

2ND ROW: Purl 22, * pick up and purl the stitch below the next stitch, purl stitch on needle directly above it. Repeat from * to last 22 stitches, p. 22. Work 4 rows in stocking-stitch. 7TH ROW: k. 22, * 110W work pattern, but reverse twist of stitches by putting 5 slipped stitches at the hack of the next 5 On left-hand needle, knit the 2 sets of 5 stitches together as before, repeat from * to last 22 stitches, k. 22. 8TH ROW: As and. Work 4 rows in stocking-stitch. Repeat last 12 rows until 4 patterns have been done.

Repeat the ist and 2nd rows once. In the next row k. 48, cast off 8, k. 48. Work on last 48 stitches as follows: — sT ROW: Purl. 2ND ROW: Cast off 3,

knit to end. 3RD ROW: Purl. 4TH ROW: Cast off 2, k. work 20 in pattern, knit to end. 5TH ROW: p. 22, work next io in pattern,

k. 1. 6TH ROW: Cast off 3, knit to end. 7TH ROW: Purl to last 2 stitches, p. 2

tog. 8TH ROW:

Cast off 3, knit to end. 9TH Row: Cast off 6, purl to last 2 stitches, p. 2 tog. 10TH ROW: k. 2 tog., knit to end. 11TH ROW: Cast off 6, p. to end.

Repeat loth and uth rows twice more, then loth row once. Cast off.

Work remaining 48 stitches to corres­pond.

SLEEVES

With No. io needles cast on 5o stitches, work 8 rows in stocking-stitch. Make a hem by picking up each cast-on stitch and knitting it with each stitch on the needle. Work straight for a further 2-1/2 inches, then increase at each end of needle in next and every following 6th row until there are 94 stitches on the needle.

Carry on straight until sleeve seam measures 18 inches.

Shape top by decreasing at each end of every row until 16 stitches remain. Cast off.

COLLAR

With No. 12 needles cast on 46 stitches.
Work 6 rows, then work hem as for sleeves.
Now decrease at neck edge on next
and every alternate

TOW 12 times,

then on every 4th row until 3o stitches remain. Work straight for

inches.

NEXT ROW: Work to within 3 stitches of neck edge, turn and work back. Work 6 rows straight. Repeat last 8 rows 4 more times; cast off.

Make another piece the same but reverse shapings for other side of neck.
