MATERIALS
* 100% wool fine weight yarn: 3 skeins light gray (5.3 oz./150 g; shown in Fonty Ambiance, #329)
* Size 8 (5.0 mm) needles
* Yarn needle
STITCHES USED
* Cloud stitch: a combination of knit and purl stitches
* Garter stitch (bows)
GAUGE
* In stockinette stitch with size 8 (5.0 mm) needles, 4" x 4" / 10 x 10 cm = 20 sts x 28 rows
INSTRUCTIONS
Cast on 38 sts.
Work in garter stitch for 4 rows.
Row 1: Knit.
Row 2: K3, purl to last 3 sts, k3.
Row 3: K3, *k3, p1; repeat from * to last 3 sts, k3.
Row 4: K3, purl to last 3 sts, k3.
Row 5: Knit.
Row 6: K3, purl to last 3 sts, k3.
Row 7: K4, *p1, k3; repeat from * to last 6 sts, p1, k5.
Row 8: K3, purl to last 3 sts, k3.
Repeat these 8 rows until the piece measures about 59"/150 cm long.
Work in garter stitch for 4 rows. Bind off loosely.
Weave in the ends.
CHILD SIZE (3–4 YEARS)
Use 2 skeins of yarn. Follow the same instructions as for the adult size, but make the scarf 30"/75 cm long instead of 59"/150 cm.
BOWS
Cast on 14 sts.
Work in garter stitch until the piece measures 5 1/2"/14 cm. Bind off loosely.
Use a strand of yarn to tie the piece in the middle to form a bow.
Sew the bow to the end of the scarf, about 4"/10 cm from the bottom edge, centering it widthwise on the scarf.
TIP
Make the bow in another color of yarn for a more creative version.
