Red Ripples

Professional knitting pattern for the Red Ripples jacket by Rick Mondragon. Features a unique multi-directional construction with wide and narrow ribbing using bulky weight yarn. Includes detailed instructions for mitered borders and shaping.

Red Ripples designed by Rick Mondragon. For a fun play of color and texture, we took our direction from the multi-textured yarn and worked a jacket in multiple directions. The wide rib pattern is worked upright in back and sideways in the fronts. A narrower rib borders the design.

Back

Cast on 12, and work Border as follows: Next row (WS) P3, [k2, p2] twice, p1. Next row (RS) K3, [p2, k2] twice, k1. Repeat last 2 rows until piece measures approximately 18 (20, 22, 24, 26)". Place first 11 stitches on hold, keeping final stitch on needle (it becomes first stitch of pick-up).

Body

With RS of Border facing, pick up and knit (PUK) 5 stitches for every 6 rows along left edge. Count stitches and adjust to 92 (100, 108, 116, 124) on next row if necessary. Next row (WS) Purl. Next row (RS) [K4, p4] to last 4, k4. Next row [P4, k4] to last 4, p4. Repeat last 2 rows until piece measures approximately 12 1/2 (12 1/2, 13 1/2, 13 1/2, 14 1/2)", end with a WS row.

Armhole shaping

At beginning of next 2 rows, bind off 8 (8, 10, 12, 14). Keeping edge stitches in stockinette, Dec 1 each side every RS row 3 times — 70 (78, 82, 86, 90) stitches. Work even until armhole measures approximately 7 (7, 8, 8, 9)". Bind off.

Left Front

Beginning at left armhole with RS facing, PUK 3 stitches for every 4 rows along left edge of Back; with second ball of yarn, PUK 11 along Border. Next row (WS) P3, [k2, p2] twice, change yarn, picking up new color from under the old, and purl across remaining stitches, adjusting to 40 (40, 44, 44, 48) if necessary — 51 (51, 55, 55, 59) stitches total. Next row (RS) [K4, p4] to last 11, change yarn, [k2, p2] twice, k3. Next row P3, [k2, p2] twice, change yarn, p0 (0, 4, 4, 0), [k4, p4] to end. Work last 2 rows a total of 4 (4, 5, 6, 8) times.

Shape armhole

Inc 1 at beginning of every RS row 6 times — 57 (57, 61, 61, 65) stitches. Next row (RS) Cast on 26 (26, 30, 30, 34) — 83 (83, 91, 91, 99) stitches. Next row (RS) [K4, p4] to last 11, change yarn, [k2, p2] twice, k3. Continue in pattern for 23 (25, 27, 29, 31) rows, end with a WS row.

Shape neck

Next row (RS) At beginning of next row, bind off 8 (9, 10, 11, 12), then Dec 1 at beginning of RS rows 3 times — 72 (71, 78, 77, 84) stitches. Work even for 12 (14, 14, 16, 16) rows, end with a RS row. Cut body yarn. Do not cut border yarn.

Border miter

Row 1 (WS) P3, k2, p2, k2, wrap and turn (W&T).

Row 2 (RS) P2, k2, p2, k3. Row 3 P3, k2, p2, k1, W&T.

Row 4 P1, k2, p2, k3. Row 5 P3, k2, p2, W&T. Row 6 K2, p2, k3. Row 7 P3, k2, p1, W&T. Row 8 K1, p2, k3. Row 9 P3, k2, W&T. Row 10 P2, k3. Row 11 P3, k1, W&T. Row 12 P1, k3.

Reverse miter, hiding wraps as you go, by working rows in the following order: Row 9, then 10; 7, then 8; 5, then 6; 3, then 4; 1, then 2.

Front borders

Row 1 (WS) P3, k2, p2, k2, p1, SSP (1 stitch from band and 1 stitch from body). Rows 2 and 4 (RS) K2, p2, k2, p2, k3. Row 3 (WS) P3, k2, p2, k2, p1, SSSP (1 from band and 2 from body). Work last 4 rows until 11 band stitches remain. Place stitches on hold.

Right Front

Beginning at lower right corner of Back with RS facing, work border stitches from holder as follows: K3, [p2, k2] twice; with second ball of yarn, PUK 3 stitches for every 4 rows along right edge of Back. Next row Purl to last 11, adjusting to 40 (40, 44, 44, 48) if necessary, change yarn, [p2, k2] twice, p3 — 51 (51, 55, 55, 59) stitches. Next row (RS) K3 [p2, k2] twice, change yarn, [p4, k4] to last 0 (0, 4, 4, 0), p0 (0, 4, 4, 0). Next row (WS) K0 (0, 4, 4, 0), [p4, k4] to last 11, change yarn, [p2, k2] twice, p3. Work last 2 rows a total of 4 (4, 5, 6, 8) times. Continue as for Left Front, EXCEPT reverse shaping. Increase for armhole at end of RS rows and cast on at beginning of WS row. Bind off for neck at beginning of WS row and decrease at end of RS rows. Work even for 11 (13, 13, 15, 15) rows, end with a WS row. Cut body yarn. Do not cut border yarn.

Border miter

Row 1 (RS) K3, p2, k2, p2, W&T. Row 2 K2, p2, k2, p3. Row 3 K3, p2, k2, p1, W&T. Row 4 K1, p2, k2, p3. Row 5 K3, p2, k2, W&T. Row 6 P2, k2, p3. Row 7 K3, p2, k1, W&T. Row 8 P1, k2, p3. Row 9 K3, p2, W&T. Row 10 K2, p3. Row 11 K3, p1, W&T. Row 12 K1, p3. Reverse miter as for Left Front.

Front border

Row 1 (RS) K3, p2, k2, p2, k1, SSK (1 from band and 1 from body). Rows 2 and 4 P2, k2, p2, k2, p3. Row 3 (RS) K3, p2, k2, p2, k1, SSSK (1 from band and 2 from body). Work last 4 rows until 11 band stitches remain. Place stitches on hold.

Sleeves

Cast on 12, and work Border as for Back for 13 (13 1/2, 14 1/2, 15, 15 1/2)", end with a RS row. Bind off 11 in pattern, leaving last stitch on needle. PUK as for Back and adjust to 64 (68, 72, 76, 80) on next row if necessary. Next row (WS) Purl. Next row (RS) K6 (4, 6, 4, 6) [p4, k4] 7 (8, 8, 9, 9) times, p2 (0, 2, 0, 2). Next row P6 (4, 6, 4, 6) [k4, p4] 7 (8, 8, 9, 9) times, p2 (0, 2, 0, 2). Work last 2 rows a total of 9 times.

Shape cap

At beginning of next 2 rows, bind off 8 (8, 10, 12, 14). Keeping edge stitches in stockinette, Dec 1 each side every 4 rows 0 (0, 0, 2, 4) times, then every RS row 16 (17, 17, 15, 12) times. Bind off remaining 16 (18, 18, 18, 20) stitches.

Finishing

Sew shoulder seams.

Neckband: With circular needle, RS facing, and starting at right front band, k3, p2, k2, p2tog, yo, k2, then pick up around neck at the following rates: 2 stitches for every 3 rows, and 1 stitch in each bound-off stitch to left front band; [k2, p2] twice, k3. Count stitches and adjust to a multiple of 4 + 2 between borders on next row. Next row (WS) P3, [k2, p2] to last 5, k2, p3. Next row (RS) K3, [p2, k2] to last 5, p2, k3. Continue working rib as established for 5 more rows. Next row Bind off in pattern. Sew sleeves into armholes. Sew side and sleeve seams. Sew on button.
