An ideal project for the beginner, these soft and cosy slippers are knitted in simple garter stitch using big needles. You can make them in just a weekend! The flower embellishments are a little more time-consuming to make but they are worth the extra effort when they are completed.

materials
- 3 x 50 g balls of Twilleys Freedom Wool (shade 420 Olive)
- Oddments of contrasting yarn in DK weight for flowers
- Pair of 6 mm (UK 4/US 10) needles
- Pair of 4 mm (UK 8/US 6) needles
- 2 decorative buttons tension
14 sts x 20 rows over stocking stitch =10 cm (4 in) using 6 mm (UK 4/US 10) needles.
LEFT SLIPPER
With 6 mm (UK 4/US 10) needles, cast on 48 sts, knit 1 row.
Next row: (K2, m1, k1 ) twice, knit to last 6 sts, (k1, m1, k2) twice. (52 sts.)
Next row: Knit.
Repeat the last 2 rows once more. (56 sts.) Next row: K25, (k1, m1 ) 6 times, knit to end. (62 sts.)
Knit 12 rows.
Shape foot
Next row: K19, (k2tog) 12 times, knit to end. (50 sts.)
Next row: K33, turn.
Next row: (K2tog) 8 times, k1, turn.
Next row: K10, turn.
Next row: (K2tog) 5 times, knit to end. Knit 1 row, cast off fairly loosely knit-wise.
Strap
Count 9 sts in from back seam, pick up and knit 4 sts from cast-off edge.
Working on these 4 sts, continue in garter stitch for 22 rows.
Next row: K2, yrn twice, k2.
Next row: K2, drop extra loop of yrn, knit it and the next st together, k1.
Next row: (K2tog) twice. Next row: K2tog and fasten off.
RIGHT SLIPPER
Work as left slipper but remember to pick up and knit the stitches for the strap on the opposite side of the foot.
FLOWER (Make 2)
Using 4 mm (UK 8/US 6) needles and DK weight yarn, cast on 57 sts.
Row 1: Purl.
Row 2: K2, *k1, slip this st back onto left-hand needle, lift the next 8 sts on left-hand needle over this st and off the needle, yo twice, knit the first st again, k2. Rep from *.
Row 3: K1, *p2tog, (kl, kltbl) into loops made on previous row, p1. Repeat from * to last st, k1. Do not cast off, run yarn through stitches on needle and draw up into a circle to form flower. Sew edge together.
to make up
Work in all ends neatly. Sew the foot seam of the slipper. Attach a button to correspond with the buttonhole in the strap. Stitch a flower to the centre front of each slipper.
