In just a couple of evenings you can knit this fun and jaunty little hat, using chunky yarn and large needles. The easy cable band is just 10 stitches in width and although it’s fairly long, it will soon grow.

- Pair of 51/2 mm (UK 5/US 9) needles
- Pair of 677 mm (UK 3/US 101/2) needles

61/7 mm (UK 3/US 101/2) needles
special abbreviations
c4b = slip next 2 stitches on to a cable needle and leave at back of work. Knit next 2 stitches in the normal way, then knit the 2 stitches from the cable needle.
c4f = slip next 2 stitches on to a cable needle and leave at front of work. Knit next 2 stitches in the normal way, then knit the 2 stitches from the cable needle.
ml = make a stitch by picking up the loop that lies between last and next st and working into the back of it.
Begin with cable band:
Using 5 mm (UK 5/US 9) needles, cast on 10 sts. Now commence pattern as follows:
Row 1: K1, p8, k1.
Row 2 (RS): K1, c4b, c4f, k1.
Row 3: K1, p8, k1.
Row 4: K10.
Row 5: As Row 3.
Row 6: As Row 4.
These 6 rows form cable pattern and are repeated throughout.
Cont in pattern until band measures 49 cm (191/4 in), ending on a WS row. Cast off.

With RS of work facing and using 61/: mm (UK 3/ US 101/2) needles, pick up and knit 86 sts evenly along one side of the cable band.
Row 1: Purl.
Row 2 (RS): Knit, increasing 16 sts evenly across row. (102 sts.)
Rows 3-5: Beginning purl work in st st.
Row 6: K6, m1, (k5, m1) to last 6 sts, k6. (121 sts.)
Rows 7-16: Beginning purl work in st st.
Now commence crown shaping as follows:
Row 1: K2, (k2tog, k7) 13 times. K2tog. (107 sts.)
Rows 2-4: Work in st st.
Row 5: K2, (k2tog, k6) 12 times. K2tog, k7.
Rows 6-8: Work in st st.
Row 9: K2, (k2tog, k5) 12 times. K2tog, k6. Rows 10-12: Work in st st.
Row 13: K2, (k2tog, k4) 12 times. K2tog, k5.
Rows 14-16: Work in st st.
Row 17: K2, (k2tog, k3) 12 times. K2tog, k4. Row 18: Purl.
Row 19: K2, (k2tog, k2) 12 times. K2tog, k3.
Row 20: Purl.
Row 21: K2, (k2tog, k1 ) 12 times. K2tog, k2.
Row 22: Purl.
Row 23: K2, (k2tog) across row to last st, kl.
Row 24: P2tog across row. Do not fasten off but run yarn through remaining sts and pull up tight, secure and fasten off. Work in all ends neatly.
